The second Lowell Elementary School, now known as R-5 High School, was completed in 1925, from designs by Denver architect Eugene Groves. For a year after the school was built, the jail remained next door. Watching the children play games on the school grounds no doubt helped time pass for those housed in the jail. The exterior and interior remain mostly unchanged.
